Wire Rope Maintenance
Wire rope is a critical component of drilling operations and is commonly used in hoisting systems such as the drilling line, traveling block, and crown block. It is composed of multiple steel wires twisted into strands that are wrapped around a central fiber or steel core, providing high strength, durability, and flexibility.
Because wire rope is subject to heavy loads, repeated bending, abrasion, corrosion, and vibration, it must be properly maintained to prevent sudden failure that could result in serious injury or equipment damage.
Seizing Wire Rope
Wire rope maintenance activities include routine visual inspections performed daily or according to the established maintenance schedule. Inspections should focus on identifying broken wires, excessive wear, corrosion, kinks, flattened sections, bird-caging, or other signs of deterioration.
When wire rope must be cut, repaired, or replaced, special precautions are required to control stored energy in the rope and prevent the strands from unlaying or whipping.
Potential Hazards
- Cuts or puncture wounds from loose, frayed, or broken wire strands at the ends of the rope.
- Eye and face injuries caused by flying metal fragments or chips when cutting wire rope.
- Sudden release of stored energy if wire rope is cut improperly, causing strands to spring apart.
Possible Solutions
- Properly seize (bind) the wire rope before cutting to prevent the strands from unlaying. Apply seizing wire or clamps tightly, then tape over the seizing with electrical tape as needed. Seize both sides of the intended cut.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when cutting or handling wire rope, including gloves, safety glasses or face shields, and protective clothing.
- Use proper cutting tools designed for wire rope and ensure they are in good condition.
- Handle cut ends carefully and properly dispose of damaged or discarded wire rope.
