Rigging Up Safety

Installing Handrails, Guardrails, Stairs, Walkways, and Ladders

Handrails, guardrails, stairways, walkways, and ladders are installed throughout the rig to provide safe access to work areas and to protect employees from falls and other hazards. These access systems are critical during rig-up and throughout drilling operations, as workers frequently move between elevated levels and around active equipment.

Proper installation, inspection, and maintenance of these components are essential. Inadequate or improperly installed access systems can significantly increase the risk of slips, trips, and falls, which are among the leading causes of serious injuries on drilling sites.

Handrails and guardrails are required to protect workers from falls.

Potential Hazards

  • Falls from ladders due to improper use, unstable placement, or inadequate securing.
  • Slips or falls from ladders and stairs caused by damaged, missing, or worn rungs and steps.
  • Slips, trips, or falls on walkways due to debris, mud, ice, oil, or uneven walking surfaces.
  • Falls from heights where guardrails or fall protection systems are not installed or are incomplete.
  • Falling into mud pits, mixing tanks, or other open areas where guarding or covers are missing.

Possible Solutions

  • Follow established company procedures, OSHA requirements, and industry best work practices when installing and using access systems.
  • Train and instruct workers on proper ladder selection, installation, and safe climbing techniques.
  • Use only ladders that are in good condition and free from defects such as missing or damaged rungs.
  • Do not install stairs with missing, loose, or damaged steps; repair or replace them before use.
  • Maintain good housekeeping by keeping walkways clean, dry, and free of debris and tripping hazards.
  • Use appropriate fall protection systems when guardrails are not yet installed or when working at unprotected edges.
  • Install guardrails and toe boards prior to performing work in elevated or hazardous areas whenever feasible.
