Maintaining Surface Control System

The surface control system includes all equipment and controls used to operate and monitor well control systems from the rig floor or remote panels. This includes BOP control panels, choke manifolds, hydraulic lines, valves, gauges, and associated piping. Proper maintenance of this system is essential to ensure that well control equipment functions correctly during normal operations and emergency situations.

Routine inspection and maintenance help ensure the system remains accessible, clearly marked, free of damage, and capable of immediate use. Any obstruction, damage, or malfunction could delay response time during a well control event.

Potential Hazards

  • Protruding pipes, valves, hoses, or fittings that create struck-by or trip hazards.
  • Being struck by dropped tools, fittings, or equipment during inspection or maintenance activities.
  • Slips, trips, and falls caused by uneven surfaces, poor housekeeping, drilling fluids, or hydraulic oil.
  • Atmospheric hazards, including the potential presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methane, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

Possible Solutions

  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hats, work gloves, safety-toed footwear, eye protection, and flame-resistant clothing where required.
  • Implement injury and hazard awareness training focused on dropped objects, struck-by hazards, and working around pressurized systems and elevated equipment.
  • Use appropriate fall protection when working at elevation or near unguarded edges.
  • Maintain good housekeeping by keeping walkways clear and promptly cleaning up spills to reduce slip and trip hazards.
  • Clearly mark and guard protruding pipes, valves, and low-clearance areas.
  • Continuously monitor for potential atmospheric hazards using gas detection equipment and follow established response procedures for H2S, methane, or oxygen-deficient conditions.
  • Ensure all control panels, valves, and emergency equipment remain accessible and unobstructed at all times.
