Handling Tubulars

Automated Catwalk Machines

Automated catwalks are more commonly used mechanized systems used on drilling rigs to move tubulars, such as drill pipe, casing, and collars, from ground level up to the rig floor or vice versa.

Automated Catwalk

These machines replace manual pipe handling, which improves safety, reduces physical strain, and increases efficiency during rig operations. The catwalk machine uses hydraulic arms, lift trays, or pipe pushers to transfer tubulars.

Benefits of Hydraulic Catwalk Systems:

  • Reduce the need for manual pipe handling and eliminate lifting injuries.
  • Improve speed and accuracy in moving pipe during tripping or casing operations.
  • Minimize the number of personnel required on the rig floor during pipe movement.
  • Coordinate smoothly with top drive systems and other automated rig equipment.

Safety Considerations:

  • Ensure all operators are trained in catwalk control systems and emergency stop procedures.
  • Inspect hydraulic systems and moving parts regularly for leaks or wear.
  • Keep non-essential personnel clear of the machine’s operation zone.
  • Monitor for signs of misalignment, overloading, or unstable pipe stacking.
