Scenario: GreenFab Inc. Develops an EMS

Do Phase Steps 13-17

  1. Provide Awareness Training to Employees
    • They schedule training sessions by department: painting staff learn about low-VOC practices, chemical handling, emergency response; maintenance staff on leak detection; lab on sampling protocols.
    • They run "toolbox talks" each morning for a week highlighting a different EMS topic (e.g. how to identify a solvent leak, how to contain a spill, importance of recordkeeping).
    • They distribute posters with "Do's and Don'ts" in chemical storage and charging areas; give each employee a one-page EMS summary card.
  2. Provide Specialized Environmental Training to Select Staff
    • EMS Manager and key staff receive advanced training on VOC monitoring, wastewater treatment, and audit procedures.
    • Training includes certification for handling hazardous materials per RCRA and OSHA requirements.
  3. Implement Plans to Meet Environmental Objectives
    • GreenFab retrofits painting booths and installs rinse tank treatments per action plans.
    • Progress is tracked against milestones, with monthly reviews to ensure alignment with objectives.
  4. Implement Operational Controls
    • They install solvent recovery systems on painting booths, ensure booths are sealed, install automatic shutoff valves on rinse tanks, and provide spill containment trays.
    • They require that painting booths only operate when exhaust fans are running; equipment must be inspected daily for seal integrity.
  5. Implement All Other System-Level Procedures
    • GreenFab enforces SOPs for chemical handling, spill response, and equipment shutdown.
    • Communication procedures include monthly EMS updates and external stakeholder reports.
