Maintaining Two-Way Communication with Employees

Effective communication is vital for managing heat stress in the workplace. Maintaining two-way communication ensures that employees can quickly report any heat-related symptoms and receive timely assistance. Supervisors and heat safety coordinators should:

Providing communication devices ensures employees can easily reach supervisors or safety coordinators.
  • Equip Employees with Communication Tools: When working in temperatures hotter than 95°F, supervisors should implement a buddy system for monitoring workers. If workers are alone, they will be provided with a handheld radio, phone, or other communication tool to reach their supervisor or safety coordinator whenever needed. Physiological monitoring devices may also be used.
  • Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins with employees, especially during peak heat times, to monitor their condition and address any concerns promptly.
  • Encourage Reporting: Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable reporting their symptoms or any observed signs of heat stress in their coworkers without fear of reprisal.
  • Immediate Response: Ensure that supervisors or safety coordinators are always available to respond immediately to any communication from employees regarding heat-related issues.
