Supervisor and Competent Person Training
Policies and Procedures for Monitoring and Emergency Response
As part of the HSMP, supervisors and competent persons must be designated and receive thorough training — both on the program’s policies and procedures, and on how to monitor heat conditions and respond to heat-related emergencies. This training ensures they can effectively protect employees and manage heat stress risks in the workplace.
Supervisor Training
Before supervising employees working in a hot work environment, supervisors must be trained to:
- Implement Program Procedures: Apply all site-specific heat-stress controls and work-rest schedules.
- Recognize & Respond to Heat Illness: Detect early signs of heat stress, initiate emergency response, and summon first aid when needed.
- Monitor Heat Conditions: Read weather reports, interpret heat alerts (WBGT or Heat Index), and adjust operations accordingly.
- Reinforce Employee Training: Understand the employee heat-stress training curriculum (including hydration best practices) and ensure it's being followed on the job.
