Removing PPE During Rest Breaks

When working in hot environments, it's important to take rest breaks to cool down and prevent heat-related illnesses. The time spent donning and doffing PPE must not be counted towards the designated rest break time.

During these breaks, removing personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary for several reasons:

  • Improved Airflow: Removing PPE allows for better air circulation around the body, helping sweat to evaporate more efficiently. This process is vital for cooling the body down.
  • Reduced Heat Retention: PPE can trap heat close to the body, increasing the risk of overheating. Taking off PPE during breaks helps release the trapped heat, allowing the body to cool more effectively.
  • Enhanced Comfort: Without heavy or restrictive PPE, workers can relax and recover more comfortably. This can lead to a quicker reduction in body temperature and a more effective rest period.
  • Prevention of Heat-Related Illnesses: By allowing the body to cool down properly, the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke is significantly reduced.
  • Increased Hydration Effectiveness: Drinking water is more effective at cooling the body when PPE is removed, as it supports the natural cooling process of sweating and evaporation.
The time spent putting on and taking off PPE must not be included in the designated rest break time.
