902 Well Site Preparation and Drilling Safety

Tripping In: Latching Elevators to Top of Stand

During tripping-in operations, the derrickhand latches the elevators onto the top of a stand of drill pipe from the monkeyboard. This allows the driller to lower the stand safely into the wellbore.

The derrickhand latches the elevators to the top of the stand from the monkeyboard.

Because this task is performed at elevation and involves suspended loads, it requires precise hand placement, secure footing, and clear communication with the rig floor.

The derrickhand must ensure the elevators are properly aligned with the pipe and fully closed and latched before signaling the driller to take weight. Any failure in this step can result in dropped pipe, struck-by injuries, or serious equipment damage.

Potential Hazards

  • Hands or fingers being pinched or crushed in elevator doors or latching mechanisms.
  • Being struck by elevators or pipe if the elevators are not fully or securely latched before hoisting.
  • Hands or fingers getting caught between the elevators and the pipe stump or tool joint.
  • Loss of balance or falls from the monkeyboard while reaching or handling elevators.

Possible Solutions

  • Ensure all workers are properly trained and instructed in correct elevator latching procedures, including verification of full closure and latch engagement.
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of pinch points and never place them between the elevator and the stump or tool joint.
  • Maintain 100% tie-off while working on the monkeyboard and use approved fall protection at all times.
  • Inspect elevators, hinges, latches, and pins regularly and remove damaged or worn equipment from service.
  • Maintain clear communication between the derrickhand and the driller before taking or setting down weight.
