Types of Heat-Related Illnesses
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is a serious condition that occurs when the body loses too much water and salt through sweating, often during intense physical activity in hot environments.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Heavy sweating
- Weakness or tiredness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Thirst
- Irritability
- Fast, weak pulse
- Cool, moist skin with goosebumps, even in the heat
- Muscle cramps
If a worker shows signs or symptoms of heat exhaustion, the employer must immediately provide emergency medical treatment. This includes calling 911 and initiating cooling procedures. While waiting for emergency services, begin cooling the worker by:
- Moving them to a shaded or air-conditioned area
- Having the worker sit or lie down and rest
- Removing excess clothing and PPE
- Applying cool, wet cloths or ice packs to the head, neck, armpits, and groin
- Encouraging the worker to slowly drink cool water or an electrolyte beverage (if they are conscious and not feeling nauseated)
- Continuing to monitor the worker’s condition closely
