Employee Rights and Protections

Your Rights to Stay Safe from Heat Stress

You have the right to take rest breaks, drink cool water, and seek shade or air-conditioned areas to protect yourself from heat stress. These rights help keep you healthy and safe while working in hot conditions:

  • Rest Breaks: You are entitled to take frequent breaks, especially during the hottest parts of the day. These breaks help cool your body, lower the risk of heat-related illness, and keep you productive.
  • Access to Water: Your employer must provide plenty of cool drinking water on-site. You should have access to at least one quart (32 ounces) of water per hour to stay hydrated and prevent dehydration.
  • Shade and Cool Areas: Your employer must make shaded or air-conditioned areas available for you to rest during breaks. These areas should be easy to access and provide a comfortable place to cool down.

Take advantage of these rights to protect yourself from heat stress and stay safe on the job.

Frequent breaks during peak heat times reduce heat-related risks and maintain productivity.
