Types of Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat Cramps

Heat cramps are muscle pains or spasms caused by the loss of electrolytes and dehydration. They often occur during heavy physical activity in hot environments and typically affect the abdomen, arms, legs, or back.

Workers experiencing heat cramps need to replace lost fluids and electrolytes.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Muscle cramps or spasms, usually in the legs, abdomen, or back
  • Heavy sweating during intense physical activity
  • Pain in muscles

If a worker experiences heat cramps they should:

  • Stop all activity, and sit in a cool place.
  • Drink clear juice or a sports beverage, or drink water with food.
  • Avoid salt tablets.
  • DO NOT resume strenuous work for a few hours after cramps subside.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if the worker has heart problems, is on a low-sodium diet, or if cramps do not subside within one hour.
