Shackles

Shackles are a common type of rigging hardware used to connect lifting slings, hoisting devices, and loads. They must be inspected to make sure they are in good condition and safe to use. Damaged or incorrectly assembled shackles can fail under load, putting workers and equipment at risk. For more information, refer to the manufacturer’s documentation, which outlines specific inspection criteria and load ratings.

Location and Type

Create a list of all shackles on the rig, including the manufacturer, type, size, and rated load capacity. This list helps track inspections and replacement needs. If a color code system is used to mark inspected lifting equipment, that same system should be applied to shackles to show they have been inspected and approved for use.

Pins

The pin is a critical part of the shackle and must be inspected closely. Make sure the threads and the shoulder of the pin are in good condition. The pin should screw into the shackle body easily using hand pressure. If the pin feels tight or cannot be fully installed without using tools, this may indicate damaged threads or deformation of the shackle body.

If tools are required to force the pin or bolt into the shackle bow, the component is likely damaged and must be taken out of service immediately. Forcing pins into place can hide serious defects that may cause the shackle to fail under load.

Screw pins must fully "shoulder up" against the outside face of the shackle ear. If the pin does not seat correctly, the load may not be evenly supported. A bent pin is a clear sign that the shackle may have been overloaded. Any shackle showing signs of overloading or deformation must be removed from service and destroyed so it cannot be used again.
