Stairways and Landings

Stairways and landings are important for safe movement around the rig.

Stairway landings on an oil rig
It is important to check that the stairways surrounding the rig are of the correct size and configuration.

They provide access between different levels and work areas, especially in emergency situations. It’s important to inspect these areas to confirm they meet the size, angle, and structural requirements for safe use. Inspections help identify damaged steps, missing railings, or slippery surfaces that could lead to slips, trips, or falls. Regular checks help ensure that these structures remain safe for employees working in all conditions.

For more information see: 29 CFR 1910.23 , 29 CFR 1910.24 , and the OSHA Stairways and Ladders Guide (publication 3124) . These regulations outline design, construction, and maintenance requirements for stairways and ladders used in industrial workplaces.

Location

All stairways and landings on the rig must be identified and listed to support complete and accurate inspections. This includes main access stairs, landings at control rooms, doghouses, and any other raised platforms. Inspectors must check for loose or damaged treads, missing or broken handrails, buildup of mud or oil, and any structural weaknesses. Any problems should be clearly documented in the comments section of the inspection form so repairs can be made promptly.
