Location/Type
Note the location and type of each auxiliary hoisting line found on the rig.
Cable Condition
Wire rope and hoisting cables are critical components used to lift and support loads on the rig. A failure of any cable can result in dropped loads, struck-by injuries, or equipment damage. Each wire rope must be inspected regularly to confirm it remains in safe operating condition. Inspections must focus on visible damage, internal wear, and signs of fatigue that may reduce the cable’s strength.
- Look for kinks, bends, or cuts in the wire rope caused by pinching, crushing, or impact with rig structures or equipment.
- Inspect the cable on the drum and along its full length for crushing or flattening, which may indicate internal core failure.
- Check for broken wires along the length of the cable. If broken wires exceed company limits, the cable must be removed from service.
- Inspect for worn or abraded areas where the cable contacts sheaves, drums, or guides. Wire ropes with rust deep inside the strands must be replaced.
- Watch for corrosion, discoloration, or stiffness, which may signal internal damage or lack of lubrication.
- Document all observed defects and note specific problems in the comment section so corrective action can be taken.
