Static Hanging Lines

Static hanging lines are non-moving cables used to support structures or equipment on the rig, such as wireline tools, sheaves, or cable guides. These lines are critical for maintaining rig safety and stability. Regular inspections are necessary to identify wear or damage that could lead to equipment failure or dropped loads. Inspections help confirm that these lines remain secure, properly installed, and free of defects.

Location

Identify all static hanging lines present on the rig. This includes lines supporting rig floors, equipment frames, overhead sheaves, or any structural component held in place with wire rope. List each line and its location to make sure it is included in the inspection process.

Type

Document the type of each static line, including its diameter, construction, and the manufacturer’s identification number. This information helps confirm that the correct type of cable is being used and ensures compatibility with rig load requirements.

Cable Condition

Inspect all static hanging lines for physical damage or signs of wear. Look for kinks that may have formed during rig up or repositioning. These kinks can weaken the line and reduce its load capacity. Cuts or notches may occur from impacts with pipe, iron, or rig components and must be noted.

Check for crushing or flat spots along the cable where internal strands may have failed. Run your hand (using gloves) along the cable to detect irregularities. Look for broken wires—if the number exceeds company guidelines, the line must be removed from service. Also inspect areas where the cable may rub against itself, brackets, or structural members, as friction can weaken the outer layers.

Cables showing rust deep inside the strands are often damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. Internal corrosion can cause the line to break unexpectedly, even if the outside looks intact. All defects should be recorded, and any cable that fails inspection must be tagged and taken out of use.
