Walking and Working Surfaces

Walking and working surfaces help prevent slips, trips, and falls by giving workers secure footing in wet, muddy, or elevated areas. Gratings and walkways provide stable walking and working surfaces across the rig.

Gratings and Walkways
Grating added to walkway for safety

This inspection helps confirm that gratings and walkways are the proper size, securely installed, and configured to safely support the tasks being performed. If gratings are missing, loose, or corroded, they can become dangerous, especially in high-traffic or elevated zones.

All gratings and walkways on the rig must be listed, and their location and purpose should be clearly identified. This includes platforms, catwalks, access ramps, and any grated areas over equipment or pits. Each area must be inspected for signs of damage such as cracks, warping, corrosion, or missing bolts. Inspectors must also confirm that gratings are properly attached, have the correct load rating, and are free from obstructions. Any issues found must be reported and addressed before allowing personnel to work in the area.
