904 Oil and Gas Well Inspection

Chain Slings

Conduct this inspection to ensure that chains are in good condition and ready for use. Chain slings are often used for lifting heavy equipment, tools, and materials on the rig.

Chain Slings

Because of the serious risks involved, it is important to make sure that each chain sling meets safety requirements and has no damage that could affect performance. For more information, see: 29 CFR 1910.184 and the manufacturer’s documentation.

Location and Type

Keep a detailed log of all chain slings located on the rig. This log should include the sling type, size, configuration, and its specific location. Inspections must be done before each use and at least once annually, as required by law. Chain slings should have a permanently attached tag showing the manufacturer’s name, the safe working load (SWL), and the date of manufacture. These tags must not be removed or damaged, as they provide critical safety information.

When not in use, chain slings should be stored in a clean, dry area to prevent rust and corrosion. They should be kept off the floor or deck and hung on proper racks or hooks to avoid damage from foot traffic, tools, or moving equipment. Keeping slings organized and off the ground helps maintain their condition and makes inspections easier.
