903 Well Site Completion and Servicing Safety

Cementing

Cementing is the application of a liquid slurry made of cement and water that is pumped to specific locations inside or outside the casing. Cementing is used to support the casing, seal off zones, prevent fluid movement between formations, and help protect groundwater. Proper cementing is critical to the safety and integrity of the well.

Cementing operations may be performed during drilling, well completion, or well servicing activities. These operations are often completed by specialized pumping service companies or performed as part of well servicing tasks such as casing installation, squeeze cementing, or zone isolation. High-pressure pumps, bulk cement trucks, and mixing equipment are commonly used during these operations.

The hazards involved in cementing operations vary depending on how dry cement is delivered, how the slurry is mixed, and the type of pumping equipment being used. Workers must recognize these hazards and follow safe work practices at all times.

Potential Hazards

  • Exposure to cement dust during unloading, transfer, or mixing operations
  • Skin or eye contact with wet cement, which can cause burns or irritation
  • Being struck by high-pressure hoses, lines, or fittings if a failure occurs
  • Equipment failure or hose whip during pumping operations
  • Slips, trips, and falls caused by spilled cement or wet surfaces
  • Noise exposure from pumping and mixing equipment

Safe Work Practices

  • Use proper PPE, including eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, and respiratory protection when handling dry cement.
  • Avoid direct skin contact with wet cement and wash exposed skin immediately.
  • Inspect hoses, lines, and fittings before pumping operations begin.
  • Ensure all pressure relief devices are in place and working properly.
  • Stand clear of pressurized lines and connections during pumping.
  • Keep work areas clean and remove spilled cement promptly to prevent slips and trips.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for mixing and pumping equipment.
  • Ensure workers are trained on cementing equipment and emergency procedures.
