General Services Safety

Introduction

Oil and gas wells often need regular maintenance to keep them working properly. Sometimes, service is needed for equipment located at the surface or deep inside the well. This process is called a workover. It is used to repair or replace parts of the well to help it produce more oil or gas.

Workovers are a common and necessary part of the petroleum industry. These operations are important when a well stops producing as much as it should. A well that has slowed down or stopped producing might not be damaged—it may just need service to get it working again.

Using a workover rig allows crews to go back into a well and fix problems without having to drill a brand-new well. This saves time and money. It also helps keep production steady and meets the energy demands of homes, businesses, and factories.

When a well is not producing at full capacity, a service or workover might be required. These operations are designed to help bring the well back to its best performance level.

Typical maintenance activities when using a workover or service rig include the following:

  • Removing the horsehead (pumping unit only)
  • Removing the wellhead
  • Pulling and running rods
  • Pulling and running tubing
