Supervisor Responsibilities
Front line supervisors are key in making sure the Fleet Safety Program is successful.
They ensure the success of daily operations by fulfilling the following responsibilities:
- Ensuring drivers have valid driver's licenses, and that they understand company driving rules before they operate a vehicle. For example, a supervisor must check that a new employee has the correct license type before assigning them a delivery truck.
- Authorizing drivers, and making sure that no one drives a special-purpose vehicle, like a forklift or utility truck, unless they have the right training and permission.
- Watching for unsafe driving behavior and correcting it right away. If a supervisor sees a driver using a phone while driving or speeding through a parking lot, they must take immediate action to stop the behavior and provide coaching.
- Reviewing preventable collisions with employees. After a crash, the supervisor must meet with the driver to go over what went wrong and what could have been done to prevent it. This helps stop future mistakes.
- Riding along with drivers now and then, and checking to make sure they are following all safety instructions and traffic laws.
- Keeping unsafe vehicles off the road until they are fixed. If a truck has worn-out tires or broken lights, the supervisor must not let anyone drive it until the issues are repaired.
