Driver Selection

Qualification Standards

Understanding a driver’s ability, experience, and attitude is a key part of hiring and keeping responsible drivers. To make sure only qualified individuals are hired or kept in driving roles, companies must set clear qualification standards. These standards apply to both new hires and current employees who drive as part of their job. To help enforce these standards, companies can follow specific driver qualification procedures.

Driver Age Requirements

The legal driving age is different in each state. It is important to check the rules for each state, especially for Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). Check Requirements for Commercial driver's licenses (CDL). These rules explain the minimum age and qualifications needed to drive certain types of vehicles.

Application for Employment

All driver applicants must fill out a complete job application. For those applying to driving jobs, a special "Driving Position Supplement" should be included. This supplement collects important information specific to driving duties, such as driving history and license details.

The supplement should ask applicants to list all former employers from the past number of years set by the company. If there are any long breaks in employment—longer than what the company allows—these gaps must be clearly explained by the applicant. This helps employers understand the applicant’s job history and verify their experience.
