Safety Procedures Before Use

Training

Only trained and authorized workers are allowed to use an aerial lift. Training should cover:

  • Dangers such as electrical hazards, falls, being struck by objects, and falling objects.
  • Procedures for dealing with hazards safely.
Aerial and Scissor Lift Training
  • Recognizing and avoiding unsafe conditions at the worksite.
  • How to handle materials on the lift.
  • Instructions on how to properly operate the lift (including maximum intended load and capacity limits).
  • Hands-on demonstrations to show the skills and knowledge needed to safely operate the lift before using it on the job.
  • When and how to inspect the lift.
  • How to report any equipment defects or maintenance needs.
  • Requirements from the manufacturer.

Retraining

Workers should be retrained if:

  • There’s an incident while using an aerial lift.
  • Workplace hazards involving an aerial lift are discovered.
  • A different type of aerial lift is used.

Employers should also retrain workers if they observe them using an aerial lift improperly.
