Ensuring Access to Cool Drinking Water

Ensuring that employees have access to cool drinking water at all times is a fundamental administrative control. Staying hydrated helps regulate body temperature by allowing the body to sweat and cool down effectively. Dehydration can impair physical and cognitive functions, leading to decreased productivity, increased risk of accidents, and serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Encouraging frequent hydration helps prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Employers should provide enough water stations throughout the worksite, particularly near work areas and rest spots, to make hydration easily accessible. Each worker should have access to at least one quart (32 ounces) of drinking water per hour. Workers performing heavy work should be encouraged to drink water (approximately 12 ounces) every 20 minutes. Water stations should be clearly marked and regularly refilled to maintain a constant supply of cool, potable water. Encouraging frequent hydration helps prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses, promoting overall health and productivity in hot working conditions.
