Location of Break Areas

Break areas should be conveniently located near your work area so you can take breaks right when you need them. This helps you make the most of your break time by reducing the time spent walking. Keep in mind that the time you spend walking to and from the break area doesn't count as part of your rest break. For mobile workers, your employer must designate break spots and ensure you have access to enough drinking water.

Outdoor break areas should be cool and shaded.

Outdoor Break Areas

Outdoor break areas should provide:

  • Cool and Shaded: Outdoor break areas must be open to the outside air and provide shade to block direct sunlight.
  • Comfortable Seating: Outdoor break areas should be equipped with comfortable seating to allow workers to rest properly during their breaks.
  • Proper Ventilation: Although outdoor areas naturally have more ventilation, positioning break areas to benefit from natural breezes or setting up fans can enhance airflow and provide additional cooling.
