Safe Storage Practices

Safe storage practices are essential to keeping workplaces organized and preventing accidents.

Steel Storage Racking

Proper storage not only protects workers but also ensures materials and equipment are easily accessible when needed. Following simple guidelines like using storage racks, keeping clear aisles, and maintaining fire safety can greatly reduce the risk of injuries, product damage, and violations of safety regulations. Implementing these practices helps create a safer and more efficient work environment for everyone.

  • Use Storage Racks: Store tall stacks in racking systems to prevent tipping, and secure items with nets or barriers. Storing materials must not create a hazard. Bags, containers, bundles, etc., stored in tiers must be stacked, blocked, interlocked and limited in height so that they are stable and secure against sliding or collapse. Place heavier loads on lower or middle shelves.
  • Storing Pallets: When not in use, properly store pallets, stacking them in flat, stable piles no higher than 4 feet.
  • Maintain Adequate Aisles: The recommended aisle width for warehouses typically ranges from 12 to 14 feet for forklifts and other mechanical equipment, depending on the size of the equipment and the type of materials being handled. For pedestrian-only aisles, a width of 4 to 6 feet is generally sufficient. The exact width should ensure safe and efficient movement of equipment and personnel. Permanent aisles and passageways should be clearly marked for safety.
  • Fire Safety: Ensure at least 18 inches of clearance below sprinkler heads to allow for proper fire suppression.
  • Examples:
    • A large warehouse installs pallet racks with protective safety nets to prevent products from falling during earthquakes.
    • A facility designates specific zones for stacking pallets to ensure aisleways remain unobstructed for forklifts and workers.
    • A supervisor conducts monthly inspections to verify that storage heights comply with fire safety regulations.
