Alarms and Shutdown

It is very important to ensure that alarm and shutdown systems are functioning properly.

Fire Alarm
Rig emergency alarms may be automatic or operated by personnel from various locations manually.

Manufacturer Instructions

Every effort should be made to inspect and maintain these systems as instructed by the manufacturer.

  • Check manufacturer's instruction to verify they include installation, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Verify that, beyond function and readiness checks, testing protocols and adjustments should be carried out by competent, trained personnel.

Alarms

Rig emergency alarms may be automatic or operated by personnel from various locations manually.

  • Verify that alarms are heard throughout the rig and on the location.
  • Verify that alarms are distinctive and easy to identify as to their purpose.
  • Check that alarms that work in conjunction with lights are visible from the entrance of the location.
  • If not done, recommend including a wind direction indicator in close proximity to the lights.
  • Check records to verify all employees are trained to activate manual alarms and understand what triggers automatic alarms.
