Education and Training

Training is a critical element in maintaining a safe workplace where machinery is used. Proper education and training ensures that employees understand the hazards associated with machines, know how to use safeguards correctly, and recognize the importance of following safety procedures. Without comprehensive training, even the best safeguards may fail to protect workers effectively.

Training Requirements for Employees

  • Initial Training
    • Provide new employees with comprehensive instruction on the hazards of machines they will operate or work near.
    • Teach the correct use of machine guards and safety devices to prevent accidents.
    • Include information on emergency procedures and how to respond if a machine malfunctions.
  • Refresher Training
    • Conduct regular refresher sessions, at least annually, to reinforce safe practices and update workers on any changes to equipment or procedures.
    • Use refresher training to remind workers of the risks of bypassing or removing guards and to promote a culture of safety.
    • Address any incidents, near misses, or new safety findings during refresher sessions.
  • Specialized Training
    • Offer focused training for employees working with high-risk machinery such as presses, grinders, or automated robotic systems.
    • Emphasize proper guard use, machine-specific hazards, and emergency shutdown procedures.
    • Include hands-on demonstrations and simulations when possible to increase understanding.

Training must emphasize the importance of hazard identification, proper safeguard use, and the severe risks involved in bypassing or disabling guards. Ensuring that employees are knowledgeable and vigilant helps reduce workplace injuries and promotes a safer environment for everyone.

Trainers should complete a Train-the-Trainer program, be evaluated for training skills by a competent person, and formally certified as qualified to conduct training by the employer. Click on the link to learn more about our 36-Hour OSH Train-The-Trainer Program.
