Machine Guards
There are many ways to safeguard machines. The type of operation, size or shape of stock, method of handling, physical layout of the work area, type of material, and production requirements or limitations will help to determine the appropriate safeguarding method for the individual machine.
Classification of Machine Guards
Machine guards are classified under four categories:
Machine Guards and Devices
- Fixed Guards – Permanent parts of the machine that prevent access to dangerous areas.
- Interlocked Guards – Automatically shut off or disengage the machine when opened or removed.
- Adjustable Guards – Can be manually adjusted to allow different sizes of material to be worked while still providing protection.
- Self-Adjusting Guards – Automatically move away from the point of operation when the material is moved into the machine and return to cover the hazard after the material is removed.
This module will discuss each of these categories of machine guards.
