The 7-Step OJT Process
Step 3: Student Tells - Trainer Shows
This step is used when the procedure being taught involves hazards that could lead to serious injury if done incorrectly.
In this step, responsibility shifts slightly. The student takes the lead by describing each specific task in the procedure. If the student does not correctly explain the task, the trainer will not perform it. Instead, the trainer will provide additional instruction until the student can correctly describe the step. Once the student explains the task correctly, the trainer will then perform the task.
For example, if the training involves operating a high-voltage electrical panel, it would be too dangerous for a new employee to handle it immediately. Instead, the employee stands nearby and explains each step of the procedure to the trainer. If the employee gives accurate instructions, the trainer performs each step as described.
This procedure also gives the trainer a chance to check for any confusion or errors in the student's understanding. By asking follow-up questions and requiring clear direction from the student, the trainer can identify whether earlier training was effective. It also builds the student's confidence in describing procedures clearly and accurately.
- The student tells the trainer how to perform each step and answers any questions the trainer may ask.
- The trainer follows the student's instructions, performing each action safely and correctly.
- As the trainer performs the task, they ask questions to confirm the student fully understands the procedure and why each step matters.
This method keeps the learner involved and thinking critically while minimizing risk. It's especially useful for high-risk tasks like operating heavy machinery, handling hazardous chemicals, or working in confined spaces where mistakes can lead to serious injury.
