The 7-Step OJT Process
Step 2: Trainer Show and Tell
Now that they trainer is ready to move into the core part of OJT, Step 2 focuses on helping the student understand the task fully—what it is, how it's done, and why it matters.
This is the "Show and Tell" phase. It's mostly about instruction, where the trainer takes the lead. The student will watch closely, ask questions, and start to connect the steps of the procedure with real-world outcomes.
At this stage, the trainer walks the student through each part of the procedure slowly and clearly. They'll begin by explaining the conditions that must be in place before the task can begin—this might include safety checks, equipment setup, or making sure the area is clear.
- The trainer reviews the initial setup or conditions for the task, such as PPE requirements, equipment settings, or hazard checks.
- They explain the importance of each step, helping you understand not just how to do it, but why it's done that way.
Once the trainer has explained a step, they'll demonstrate how to do it. The student's job is to pay close attention to every movement and detail. Watch how tools are used, how posture is maintained, or how the trainer checks for accuracy.
- The trainer performs each task one at a time, following the correct procedure.
- The student will observe the full demonstration without interrupting, so they can see how everything flows from start to finish.
After each demonstration, the student is encouraged to ask questions. They should not hesitate to speak up—this is a chance to clear up anything that seems confusing or unclear. The trainer expects questions, and they'll use those questions to reinforce key points.
- The student asks about anything that's unclear—what tool was used, why a step was done in a certain order, or what to do if something goes wrong.
- The trainer explains again as needed and may repeat parts of the demonstration to make sure the student understands.
This process continues until both student and trainer feel confident that how the task should be performed is understood. Once the student is clear on the entire procedure, they'll be ready to move on to the next step—trying it under supervision.
