Transporting Employees in Vehicles

When transporting employees in company vehicles, safety must always come first. The vehicle operator is responsible for making sure that all riders are seated properly, wearing seat belts, and following company safety rules.

The following safety rules must be followed:

  • No more than three employees should ride in the front seat or cab of a vehicle. For example, in a pickup truck, only the driver and two passengers may sit in the front if there are three seat belts available.
  • Each seating position must be equipped with a seat belt. If a vehicle only has two seat belts in the front, then only two people may ride in the front seat.
  • All passengers must wear seat belts at all times while the vehicle is moving. For example, workers riding to a job site in a company van must buckle their seat belts before the vehicle leaves.
  • No employees may ride or work from the bed or rear of a vehicle while it is moving. This includes trucks, trailers, or flatbeds. For instance, a worker standing in the back of a moving pickup truck could fall and be seriously injured.
  • Do not overcrowd vehicles. Every passenger must have their own seat and seat belt. Standing or sitting on the floor or between seats is not allowed.
  • Use approved seating areas only. Employees may not ride in cargo areas, tool storage areas, or anywhere not designed for passengers.
  • Keep aisles and exits clear. When transporting several workers, nothing should block the exit paths or cover emergency tools like fire extinguishers or first aid kits.
