Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Portable fire extinguishers must be inspected at least monthly. Check the following items regarding portable fire extinguishers when evaluating the FPP:

• Fire extinguishers should be inspected at least monthly.
• Fire extinguishers should not be obstructed and should be in a conspicuous location.
• When visually obstructed, an approved means should be provided to indicate location of fire extinguishers.
• Fire extinguisher should be mounted on the wall with a hanger.

Monthly Inspection Requirements

• Inspect to ensure proper condition and function.
• Record the inspection date and the inspector's initials on the inspection tag.

Steps to Inspect a Fire Extinguisher

• Confirm accessibility: Make sure the extinguisher is not blocked and can be easily reached.
• Check mounting: Ensure the extinguisher is mounted securely on a wall hanger or bracket.
• Verify pressure: The needle on the pressure gauge should be in the green (operable) zone.
• Inspect condition: Look for dents, corrosion, leaks, or other physical damage.
• Confirm label and instructions: Instructions should be legible and face outward.
• Check pin and seal: The pull pin should be in place and the tamper seal unbroken.

Placement and Visibility Requirements

• At least one 2A-10:BC extinguisher must be located within 75 feet of travel distance from any point on each floor.
• Extinguishers must be placed in a conspicuous, accessible location.
• If visibility is blocked, use an approved sign or label to indicate the extinguisher’s location.
