Protecting Employees from Fire Hazards

Employers must train workers about fire hazards in the workplace and about what to do in a fire emergency.

Employees must receive both instruction by a competent person and hands-on practice.

They must also certify employees are competent in using extinguishers and authorize them to do so.

Supervisors must train employees about the fire hazards associated with the specific materials and processes to which they are exposed, and maintain written documentation of the training.

Trainers must be competent persons who can make sure each student has adequate knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to safely operate a portable fire extinguisher.
