710 Energy Control Program (Lockout/Tagout)

Basic Lockout/Tagout Steps

Step 2: Notification of Employees

Before applying lockout/tagout (LOTO) devices, the employer or authorized employee must notify all affected employees that energy control procedures will be performed. Affected employees are those who operate the equipment or work in the area where servicing or maintenance will occur.

Notification is critical because it:

  • Prevents unexpected start-up or energization
  • Reduces confusion about why equipment is shut down
  • Helps ensure no one attempts to operate the equipment
  • Supports overall workplace communication and safety

What the Notification Should Include

The communication should clearly explain:

  • Which equipment will be locked out
  • Why the lockout/tagout is being performed
  • How long the equipment is expected to be out of service (if known)
  • Who is responsible for the lockout/tagout

Notification can be done verbally, through written procedures, shift logs, work orders, or other effective communication methods. The method used should match the workplace environment and ensure all affected employees receive the information.
