Committee Representative Functions
For a safety committee meeting to be effective, committee representative must understand their responsibilities, and actively participate to help identify hazards, solve problems, and improve safety.
Six Rules for Effective Meetings
The list below describes safety committee representative responsibilities and the functions they perform.
- Report employees' safety and health concerns: Employee concerns should be reported to the committee during the meeting for discussion and action. Report the results back to employees to improve committee-workforce credibility and participation.
- Report workplace hazards: To help prevent future injuries and illnesses, inform the committee about accidents, incidents, hazardous conditions, and unsafe work practices personally observed. It's important not to "name names" when reporting.
- Suggest items for the meeting agenda: Offer suggestions for improving employee participation and safety improvement.
- Encourage employees to participate in safety: Outside the meeting, encourage employees to work safe and report safety concerns so they can be addressed in meetings. Recognize employees who actively participate.
- Participate in safety inspections: Actively participate in conducting committee inspections and making recommendations
- Help evaluate the company's safety and health program: Assist supervisors and managers improve safety in their areas of responsibility
- Help establish procedures: Participate in conducting safety meetings, on-the-job training, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
