702 Effective Accident Investigation

Step 1: Secure the Scene

The first step in an effective accident investigation procedure is to promptly secure the accident scene, enabling us to accurately gather facts.

Let everyone know you're conducting an accident investigation. Secure the scene first.

At this point, your primary focus should not be on determining the cause of the accident. Instead, concentrate on securing the accident scene to gather as much relevant information as possible.

To secure the accident scene, you can use yellow caution tape, position warning cones, or assign a guard to keep people away.

Getting Started

You should commence the investigation only when it is safe to do so. As the accident investigator, avoid interfering with emergency responders, and ensure that hazards have been adequately mitigated before beginning.
