Using Fall Protection and Fall Restraints

Fall Protection: Fall protection is critical when working at heights. For aerial lifts (especially boom lifts), workers must wear a full-body harness attached to the boom or bucket of the lift. This prevents them from being thrown out of or falling from the platform. Workers must never attach their harness to nearby structures, poles, or equipment that are outside of the bucket because they may be pulled out of the bucket if the lift is moved.

Harnesses Save Lives

Proper Use of Fall Restraints: Fall restraints limit the worker's movement on the platform, keeping them within a safe area and preventing them from reaching outside the guardrails. Ensure workers are trained to use these systems properly. Some aerial lift models require fall restraints to prevent damage to the lift and reduce the risk of a tip-over when stopping a worker's fall. Always check the manufacturer's guidelines to know what type of fall protection equipment is needed.

Inspect Harnesses and Lanyards: Before each use, inspect all fall protection equipment, including harnesses and lanyards, to ensure it is in good working condition and properly secured to the lift's anchor points.

Guardrails: Guardrails are considered the primary fall protection for scissor lifts. Workers should ensure that guardrails are secure and avoid climbing, leaning over or placing weight on them. Workers should stand firmly on the floor of the bucket or lift platform. Workers should not use planks, ladders, or other devices as a working position.
