Observation for Signs and Symptoms

To keep you safe and prevent heat-related illnesses when the heat index reaches high levels, your employer must use one or more of the following methods to monitor employees:

The buddy system is a method that can be used for monitoring for heat related illnesses.
  • Buddy System: Pair up with a coworker to watch for signs of heat stress in each other.
  • Supervisor or Heat Safety Coordinator Monitoring: A designated person will regularly check employees for signs of heat-related issues.
  • Two-Way Communication: For employees working alone, employers must regularly check workers' conditions through direct communication (e.g., mobile phone or radio) or physiological monitoring devices.
