SEMS BSEE Evaluation

BSEE - Explore What We Do and Why We Do It

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), Department of the Interior, has three long-term goals (2016-2019):

  1. Safety: Reduce risk to those working offshore by advancing a culture of safety that encourages industry to go beyond baseline regulatory compliance.
  2. Environment: Promote environmental stewardship through integrated prevention, compliance, and preparedness activities.
  3. Conservation: Actively identify and pursue opportunities to improve oil and gas recovery and ensure accurate production measurement.

As we can see from these three goals, BSEE works to promote safety, protect the environment, and conserve resources offshore through vigorous regulatory oversight and enforcement. To achieve these goals, BSEE focuses its efforts in three strategic areas:

  1. Protecting the Environment - Ensure that offshore energy operations comply with applicable environmental regulations.
  2. Overseeing Industry - Develop and enforce standards and regulations to enhance operational safety and environmental protection.
  3. Driving Innovation - Assess fitness for service, or/and the root causes of incidents and near-miss events and provide recommendations, or alert BSEE of critical safety issues that may require immediate action.
