Controlling Asbestos Exposure

Workers are likely to be exposed to asbestos during demolition operations.

House Demolition Creates Asbestos Exposure

Heavy exposures tend to occur in the construction industry and in ship repair, particularly during the removal of asbestos materials due to renovation, repairs, or demolition. This exposure creates a very real danger to the safety and health of workers.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the name given to six naturally occurring incombustible minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion.

Asbestos minerals formed millions of years ago when heat, pressure, or chemical activity changed the physical and chemical characteristics of pre-existing rock. Unlike other minerals, which consist of tightly bound crystals, asbestos minerals are characterized by the presence of densely packed bundles of fibers.

In 1989, the U.S. EPA issued a final rule banning some, but not all, asbestos-containing products. For additional information, please visit the U.S. EPA: Asbestos page.
