Selecting the Right Scaffold for the Job

Choosing the right type of scaffold is one of the most important steps in scaffold safety. The scaffold must match the type of work being done, the location, and the height required. Employers are responsible for selecting the correct scaffold. This responsibility cannot be passed on to a contractor or outside company.

If the employer hires a scaffold supplier, rental company, or erection service, they must choose one that is experienced and knowledgeable about scaffold equipment and safety requirements. The company should have a clear understanding of the type of scaffold needed for the job and how to assemble it properly.

The employer must also get the owner's manual provided by the scaffold manufacturer. This manual includes important information about how to use the scaffold safely. It lists equipment limitations, intended uses, maintenance needs, and any special warnings. Reviewing the manual before work begins helps prevent improper use and reduces the risk of accidents.

Using the right scaffold for the job—and making sure it is designed and installed correctly—is critical to protecting workers and staying in compliance with safety regulations.

If you select your own scaffold, begin by reviewing the written requirements (blueprints, work orders, etc.) to determine where scaffolds should be used and the type of scaffolding needed.

Make sure scaffolds you select meet all government and manufacturer design and use requirements. Consider that scaffolds are generally rated light, medium and heavy duty.

  • Light duty scaffolds can support a limited number of employees and hand tools.
  • Medium duty scaffolds should be capable of safely holding workers, hand tools and the weight of construction materials being installed.
  • Heavy duty scaffolds are needed when the scaffold should sustain workers, tools and the weight of stored materials.
