Supervisor Responsibilities

Individuals supervising welding operations should ensure the safe handling of cutting or welding equipment and the safe use of the cutting or welding process.

The supervisor should determine the hazardous areas present, or likely to be present, in the work location.

They should identify combustible materials and hazardous areas that are present or likely to be present in the work location. They should protect combustibles from ignition by following safe procedures and practices:

  • Have the work moved to a location free from dangerous combustibles.
  • If relocation of work is not possible, move combustibles to a safe distance or have the combustibles properly shielded against ignition.
  • Schedule cutting and welding at times when plant operations that could expose combustibles to ignition are not active.
  • Secure authorization for the cutting or welding operations from Qualified Person (QP).
  • Make sure the cutter or welder checks that conditions are safe before starting work.
  • Make sure fire protection and extinguishing equipment are properly located at the site.
  • Where fire watches are required, make sure they are available at the site.
