Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

OSHA does not require lockout/tagout retraining on a fixed annual schedule. Retraining is required when an employee's job assignment changes, machines, equipment, or processes create new hazards, energy-control procedures change, or when an inspection or other evidence shows that an employee is not following or fully understanding the procedures. OSHAcademy's Course 710 also notes that annual practice can be a good idea when employees do not use lockout/tagout procedures often.

Lockout/tagout training helps workers recognize hazardous energy and understand the procedures used to control it before servicing, maintenance, or other work on machines and equipment. It supports safer work practices around electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, and other energy sources.

Authorized employees perform lockout/tagout and apply energy-control devices. Affected employees operate or use equipment being serviced, or work in areas where lockout/tagout is performed. Affected employees do not apply lockout/tagout devices, but they must understand the purpose and use of the energy-control procedure.

Yes. OSHAcademy lockout/tagout courses are available online and can be completed at your own pace. Students can access course materials for free and may purchase a training certificate package when they need documentation of completion.

OSHAcademy provides training certificates for completed courses when a certificate package is purchased. OSHA does not issue or endorse OSHAcademy certificates, and employers remain responsible for determining whether training satisfies the OSHA requirements that apply to their workplace and employees.

Lockout/tagout training commonly covers hazardous energy sources, energy-control procedures, lockout and tagout devices, authorized and affected employee responsibilities, periodic inspections, and safe steps for applying and removing energy controls.

Yes, if you have purchased a training certificate package before taking the course. Otherwise, if you complete the course and final exam before buying a training certificate package, your exam score will be saved in our training system, allowing you to purchase a training certificate package whenever you choose.

OSHA identifies different training needs for authorized, affected, and other employees. Authorized employees need training on recognizing hazardous energy and safely applying and removing energy controls. Affected employees need to understand the purpose and use of the energy-control procedure, while other employees working near lockout/tagout activities need awareness-level instruction.
