Building a Culture of Safety -
Joseph Moreno's Story
- Senior Security Specialist
- United States
- "OSHAcademy helped me realize that this isn’t just something I’m good at; it’s something I want to continue building my career around."
As a Senior Security Specialist, Joseph Moreno knows that safety is more than just following rules—it’s about fostering a culture where employees feel protected and valued. With years of experience in construction and warehouse operations, he has seen firsthand how proactive safety measures can prevent incidents and boost morale.
Growing His Expertise with OSHAcademy
Seeking to expand his expertise, Moreno completed OSHAcademy’s 132-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Professional Program and is currently pursuing the 40-Hour HAZWOPER Program. He credits the training with giving him the tools to make a tangible impact. "OSHAcademy training has truly set me up for success, reinforcing my expertise and establishing me as a safety professional within my company. I’ve taken what I’ve learned and applied it in real-time."
Turning Training into Real-World Results
One of Moreno’s most significant accomplishments was implementing Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reports, leading to a measurable reduction in near-miss incidents and reinforcing safety as a core workplace value. "Employees recognize that safety comes first, improving morale as they see their well-being valued," he said. For him, safety isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating a workplace that functions as a safe and efficient environment. "A warehouse operates like a living, breathing entity, and if you don’t nurture it properly, safety issues can spiral out of control."
Improving Warehouse Traffic Flow
Among his most impactful initiatives was improving warehouse traffic flow. Previously, workers used the same overhead door for both entry and exit, creating congestion and increasing the risk of injuries. Instead of enforcing immediate change, Moreno engaged employees to understand the root of the issue. Through a JHA and corrective action plan, he established a dedicated overhead entry and a separate exit, improving safety while maintaining operational efficiency. "This not only improved safety but also maintained efficiency; a win-win scenario that wouldn’t have been possible without the training I received."
Why Practical Training Matters
Moreno values OSHAcademy’s practical and accessible approach to safety training. "The online learning platform made it incredibly accessible, and the content wasn’t just theory; it was real-world applicable." He also credits the training for empowering him to create lasting change. "This training empowers you to create solutions that actually work. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about developing a proactive mindset that prioritizes safety without compromising efficiency."
Preparedness Beyond Daily Operations
Beyond workplace safety, Moreno highlights how OSHAcademy strengthened his approach to emergency preparedness. "OSHAcademy’s training helped me instill that level of preparedness, ensuring that in any emergency, we aren’t just reacting; we’re executing a well-rehearsed plan."
Igniting a Career of Purpose
Looking back, Moreno sees OSHAcademy as more than just a training program—it was a pivotal moment in his career. "This training has truly ignited a passion for safety in me. While I’ve always been a strong advocate for workplace safety, OSHAcademy helped me realize that this isn’t just something I’m good at; it’s something I want to continue building my career around."
