Benzene (C6H6)

What is Benzene?

Benzene is a highly flammable liquid that appears colorless to light yellow and has a sweet, gasoline-like odor.

Benzene Hazards

Workers may be exposed while skimming or vacuuming fresh oil from the water surface. Workers may inhale benzene vapors released into the air, especially in warm weather when evaporation rates are higher.

Health Risks

Benzene affects the blood-forming system and poses serious long-term health risks.

  • Short-term exposure may cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation.
  • Other acute effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, and confusion.
  • Long-term exposure damages bone marrow and reduces red blood cell production.
  • Benzene is a known cause of leukemia and other blood disorders.

Occupational Exposure Limits

  • NIOSH REL: TWA 0.1 ppm; STEL 1 ppm.
  • OSHA PEL: TWA 1 ppm; STEL 5 ppm.
