Task-Specific Accidents
Hazards Associated with Slips
During derrick operations, slips are toothed wedges positioned between the drill pipe and the master bushing or rotary table. Their purpose is to suspend the drill string in the wellbore when it is not supported by the hoist.
Pulling Slips
Common categories of accidents occurring during slip operations include the following:
- Material Handling Injuries: The most common category of accidents occurring during slip operations are related to material handling. Back and shoulder strains are common when lifting or maneuvering slips. Improper lifting techniques or overexertion often contribute to these injuries.
- Slippery Surfaces: Slippery walking/working surfaces due to wet or oily rig floors can also cause slips and falls. Slippery surfaces also increase the chance of dropping slips on workers' feet.
Lack of communication between the driller and the employees engaged in the slip operations and lack of coordination between employees engaged in the task also contribute to accident potentials in slip handling.
