Most provisions of OSHA 1926.1440 apply to dedicated pile drivers.

The only exceptions are the following:

  • the requirement in OSHA 1926.1416 for an anti-two-blocking device;
  • certain requirements of OSHA 1926.1433 that apply to design, construction, and testing of mobile cranes; and
  • the requirement in OSHA 1926.1416 for load weighing and similar devices applies only to dedicated pile drivers manufactured after November 8, 2011.

Sideboom Cranes

Most provisions of OSHA 1926.1440 also apply to sideboom cranes. The exceptions are:

  • OSHA 1926.1402 (Ground conditions)
  • OSHA 1926.1415 (Safety devices)
  • OSHA 1926.1416 (Operational aids)
  • OSHA 1926.(Operator qualification and certification)

In addition, instead of the provision on boom free fall found in OSHA 1926.1426, sideboom cranes in which the boom is designed to free fall (live boom) are permitted only if manufactured prior to November 8, 2010. OSHA 1926.1440 also specifies that sideboom cranes mounted on wheel or crawler tractors must meet certain listed requirements of ASME B30.14 ("Side Boom Tractors").
