OSHA Inspections

The OSH Act authorizes OSHA Compliance Safety and Health Officers, also called OSHA inspectors, to conduct workplace inspections at reasonable times.

The OSHA Inspection Process.

OSHA conducts inspections without advance notice, except in rare circumstances (for example, when there is a report of an Imminent Danger). In fact, anyone who tells an employer about an OSHA inspection in advance can receive fines and a jail term.

Inspection Priorities

Since not all eight million worksites covered by OSHA can be inspected, the agency has a system of inspection priorities. Priorities are based on the "worst-first" principle, meaning that those situations that are the most dangerous have the highest priority. We'll discuss these priorities in the next few sections.
