Characteristics of Hazardous Waste
The EPA has identified four characteristics for hazardous waste.
The Power of Sulfuric Acid
Any solid waste that exhibits one or more of these characteristics is classified as hazardous under RCRA :
- Ignitability covers wastes that readily catch fire, including certain liquids, combustible solids, ignitable compressed gases, and oxidizers.
- Corrosivity covers strongly acidic or alkaline aqueous wastes and liquids that corrode steel at or above the regulatory rate.
- Reactivity covers wastes that are unstable, react violently with water, form potentially explosive mixtures, or release toxic gases under specified conditions.
- Toxicity covers wastes that can leach regulated contaminants at or above specified concentrations and contaminate groundwater.
When hazardous wastes are being transported, they are regulated by the DOT.
